In general, you can expect a <strong>switching window<\/strong> of somewhere between<strong> two to four months<\/strong> &ndash; although it&rsquo;s not unheard of to only have one month, or anything up to six months.<\/p>\n<p>You can start comparing and preparing to switch anywhere <strong>up to six months<\/strong> <strong>before<\/strong> the <strong>end of your contract<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Will you be notified of your renewal dates?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes &ndash; if you run a micro business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofgem.gov.uk\/key-term-explained\/micro-business-consumer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Ofgem definition of a micro business consumer<\/a> is an organisation that meets <strong>one<\/strong> of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10 employees or fewer, or FTE (full-time equivalent), plus has an annual turnover or balance sheet of &euro;2 million maximum (approximately &pound;1.8 million, at the time of writing)<\/li>\n<li>100,000 kWh maximum of electricity usage each year<\/li>\n<li>293,000 kWh maximum of gas usage each year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As well as offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofgem.gov.uk\/consumers\/business-gas-and-electricity-guide\/understand-energy-contracts-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a guide to understanding energy contracts for business<\/a>, Ofgem has also put other measures in place to protect micro business consumers. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For fixed-term contracts, suppliers are required to include the finish date and notice period on all bills<\/li>\n<li>Micro businesses can inform their suppliers that they plan to switch providers when the current contract expires at any point in advance of the notice period<\/li>\n<li>There&rsquo;s a maximum notice period of 30 days to end a micro business contract<\/li>\n<li>Suppliers must let micro businesses know their annual energy consumption amount approximately 60 days before the end date of a fixed-term contract, as well as provide information on how their current rates compare to new deals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, if you run a bigger business, you&rsquo;re responsible for checking the renewal dates yourself.<\/p>\n<p>As such, be sure to find out when you can switch, as it&rsquo;s likely to be the only opportunity to do so. If you don&rsquo;t switch, you could be rolled over to another contract &ndash; and potentially be hit with a hefty hike in prices.<\/p>\n<h3>Can you cancel during a contract?<\/h3>\n<p>You can cancel during the contract term if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your business goes bankrupt<\/li>\n<li>You move business address<\/li>\n<li>Your business is on a <a href=\"https:\/\/startups.co.uk\/premises\/energy\/how-to-switch-business-energy-provider\/#typesofcontracts\">deemed or out of contract tariff<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The latter might have happened if you moved into a new premises, or if your current contract expired and you were put on a deemed\/out of contract by default. If this is the case, you can switch any time, and the renewal window and other switching restrictions don&rsquo;t apply.<\/p>\n<p>If none of these apply, it <em>may<\/em> still be possible to cancel and switch suppliers &ndash; you&rsquo;d have to contact your current provider to find out, though.<\/p>\n<h3>What happens if you don&rsquo;t switch?<\/h3>\n<p>If you don&rsquo;t switch suppliers, out-of-contract rates will generally apply after a contract ends. These rates tend to be considerably more expensive than in-contact tariffs, which is why it can pay to shop around.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<\/p><div class=\"jumplink-anchor-section\">\n <div class=\"jumplink-anchor-pointer\" id=\"link-compare-business-energy-contracts-and-prices\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n[vc_column_text show_in_index=&rdquo;true&rdquo; title_index=&rdquo;Compare business energy contracts and prices&rdquo; title_type=&rdquo;h2&Prime; title=&rdquo;Compare contracts and prices&rdquo;]\n<h2>Compare contracts and prices<\/h2>\n<p>There are two figures you need to check when comparing business electricity and gas services. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Price per kWh (kilowatt-hour) &ndash; this is how much you pay per unit of energy, and is generally provided in pence<\/li>\n<li>Standing charge &ndash; the price you pay each day to receive the service, irrespective of how much energy you use. You&rsquo;re charged for each service, so your electricity and gas rates will both have individual standing charges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/consumer\/energy\/energy-supply\/your-small-businesss-energy-supply\/switching-your-small-business-to-a-new-energy-supplier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Citizens Advice<\/a>, business energy contracts can be agreed over the phone, meaning you can be signed up to a contract without a signature.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it&rsquo;s wise to get suppliers to send you a copy of the terms and conditions in writing, so you can review them before getting locked into a contract.<\/p>\n<h3>Which information do you need?<\/h3>\n<p>In order to compare deals, you&rsquo;ll need to have:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meter numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) for electricity<\/li>\n<li>MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) for gas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You&rsquo;ll need to know both the MPAN and the MPRN in order to switch your business gas and power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy consumption<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you run a micro business, the annual usage should be included on your renewal letter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A lot of the information you&rsquo;ll need can be found on a <strong>recent bill<\/strong>, which should contain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unit rates and standing charges<\/li>\n<li>Energy consumption<\/li>\n<li>Meter numbers<\/li>\n<li>Contract end date<\/li>\n<li>Notice period (when you can inform a supplier that you plan to switch)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You should contact your supplier if you&rsquo;re unable to locate this information on your bill or contract.<\/p>\n<p>You&rsquo;ll also need to provide key<strong> business details<\/strong>, such as where the energy will be used, including if you require supplies for multiple locations.<\/p>\n<h3>Contract checklist<\/h3>\n<p>When assessing if a contract is right for your business, review the following things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Length &ndash; how long you&rsquo;ll be committed to the contract<\/li>\n<li>Unit price &ndash; the agreed amount, and if it&rsquo;s subject to change<\/li>\n<li>Notice period &ndash; for ending the contract<\/li>\n<li>Extra charges &ndash; e.g. maintenance or cancellation fees<\/li>\n<li>Cooling-off period &ndash; domestic customers have the option to change their mind within a 14-day period of time. This usually doesn&rsquo;t apply for business customers, but you can ask just in case<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"typesofcontracts\"><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]\n the amount of energy your business uses. Businesses are generally required to sign up for one to three years for a fixed term contract.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Variable rate&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The unit cost differs during the contract, and it&rsquo;s usually connected to market prices, which are based on demand. The higher the demand, the more you can expect to pay, and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deemed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also known as out of contract rates, these are usually more expensive options, which tend to apply if a new contract isn&rsquo;t agreed. They can also apply if you move into a new premises, and use the pre-existing energy supplier without a new contract in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28-day contract&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an old type of contract, which only applies for businesses that haven&rsquo;t switched suppliers since the energy market was deregulated in the early 2000s.
